Processing QA for Spray-Applied Polyurethane Foam:  New Equipment and Test Shot Method

Session Description 

Eighty-five percent of foam failures or material quality problems I work on are due to improper processing.  Installers cannot depend on their equipment to dispense chemicals at the correct temperatures and on ratio.  Factory-molded foam product manufacturers have had fail-safe quality assurance capabilities in place for decades, but this has not been standard for equipment used in the spray-applied polyurethane foam (SPF) industry.

This program highlights the importance of verifying and maintaining the proportioner flow rate ratio, and introduces a new equipment offering from one foam equipment manufacturer that addresses this issue. Now specifiers will be able to require fault-protection equipment for their SPF installations.

Learning Objectives:

1.    Participants will be able to require manufacturers to provide a comprehensive set of processing parameters that will help assure the proper processing of foam plastic products in their future projects.

2.    Participants will be able to specify that SPF installers use equipment that has integral quality assurance fault-protection monitoring to prevent foam processing problems.

3.    Participants will be able to determine which brands of foam are appropriate for their SPF projects.

4.    Participants will be able to specify quality assurance protocols, including on-site test shots.

About Henri Fennell:

Henri Fennell is a building envelope specialist and architect with forty-five years of experience in energy conservation design, manufactured products, and services. His work with polyurethane foam began during the energy crisis of the 1970s. 

His experience has included being a practicing architect, managing a contracting business, a building envelope consultant, and a remediation and commissioning consultant. Major projects include the Guggenheim Museum and Grande Hotel condominium complex ice dam remediation projects in the northeast. He has designed several new micro-load buildings, including a cutting-edge net-zero energy research structure in Antarctica, and performed large contracts including the largest frozen-earth retaining installation for the Big Dig.

Henri has four energy-related U.S. patents, and has contributed to ASTM standards, ASHRAE Journal, trade organizations, and is often cited in articles related to energy conservation and building performance.
