Energy & Healthy Home Assessments at the Same Time! It Is Possible!

Joe Medosch, Healthy Building Scientist

Hayward Score, Loveland, Colorado

Kevin Kennedy - Program Director Environmental Health

Children’s Mercy Kansas City, Kansas City, Missouri

About this program:

This session will cover the overlapping areas between an Energy Audit and a Healthy Home Assessment.

We will demonstrate the path to add the Healthy Home components with minimal effort and time to the standard energy audit. We have just added the direct and indirect health benefits from energy improvements and healthy home upgrades.

This session will define what a Healthy Home Assessment is or should be. We'll also include options that are more advanced measurements / tests that can be performed, how much additional time is needed to complete these measurements and the benefits.

We'll also cover the documented health benefits associated with energy improvements (hint: air sealing has more health benefits than energy benefits).

This session will step through the assessment starting on the exterior, then move through the interior and includes the attic and crawlspace. As we move through the standard energy assessment we will then expand on what are other conditions that may have health risks and what to observe. The tour includes the health benefits to the energy upgrades.

Learning Objectives:

1- Be able to describe the similarities between Energy Audits and Healthy Home assessments

2- Be able to explain at least 3 individual health benefits from energy improvements

3- Be prepared to add Healthy Home assessments to their existing process

4- List 3 healthy home safety risks not associated with an energy audit
