About this program:
This program will address the challenges and opportunities every school system faces when upgrading the ventilation systems in an existing school building. The session brings together a trio of seasoned professionals representing the owner’s, the engineer’s, and the contractor’s perspective, each of which are critical for project success. The presenters will discuss actual projects that are either recently completed or are in the design/bid process, so that attendees can learn about why certain design elements were selected and why others were not. Attendees will see summaries of actual project data both before and after project completion, including student absentee data, energy use, and code compliance improvements.
Attendees will learn:
Appreciation of the value of the team approach that includes the owner, the engineer, and the contractor
Which design elements are critical to include in your next project, and which elements to leave out.
How to evaluate project success using pre-project and post-project data
Application of codes and standards, as well as guidance for building operations during the COVID-19 pandemic
How to navigate the challenges and limitations of upgrading existing school ventilation systems
About the Presenters:
Bill Hansen, P.E. is the Director of Facilities at RSU #14 Windham Raymond Schools where he is responsible for managing 600,000 square feet of educational building space, a waste water treatment plant, and all school properties. The nine buildings range in age from 3 years old to 78 years old. Bill has been in this role for the last twelve years. Previously Bill worked 20 years for S. D Warren/Sappi Fine Papers in Facilities, Process, and Project Engineering. His educational background includes a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a Certificate in Pulp and Paper Management from the University of Maine at Orono.
Greg Marles: is the President of Thayer LLC, a HVAC, refrigeration, and plumbing contractor in Auburn, Maine. Greg has over 38 years in HVAC/R and electrical contracting field, Municipal Facility Director , and HVAC/R and electrical engineering fields. Greg hold 4 State of Maine Licenses, certified HVAC/R design professional, LEED-GA Certified, Certified Project Manager, holds Business Finance degree from South New Hampshire University, and advanced study certificate in Workforce Development.
Ian MacDonald: is a leader in designing complex HVAC and plumbing systems for public/private K-12 as well as higher education facilities. Ian is an energy saving and green design expert, with over 30 years of experience. Ian’s early experience with equipment sales and installation provides him with a practical viewpoint gained from field experience with many operating systems. He completed the ASHRAE Professional Development Course on Building Commissioning and is a LEED™ Accredited Professional.
