Beyond Four Walls and a Roof: Connecting People, Health, and the Indoor Environment
Carl Grimes, HHS, CIEC
Hayward Healthy Home Institute - Denver, CO
About this program:

What makes an indoor environment truly “healthy”? It’s not just about the building’s structure, materials, or air systems—it’s also about how people experience the space. While scientists can measure building conditions with precision, people’s experiences are often described through stories and symptoms. Bridging these two perspectives—objective measurements and subjective human experience—has long been a challenge.
This program introduces a new approach that brings both sides together. We’ll look at ASHRAE Guideline 10, which outlines how building systems interact to influence Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), as well as explore groundbreaking research by Dr. Claudia Miller (University of Texas, San Antonio). Her work introduces the Symptom Star, a practical tool that links building conditions with occupant experiences in real time.
Join us to see how this method helps transform data into understanding, making it possible to create indoor spaces that truly support human health and well-being—because health is about people, not just buildings.

What You'll Learn:
-
Why Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) is about more than buildings – how both physical systems and human experiences shape our sense of health indoors.
-
What ASHRAE Guideline 10 offers – an overview of its framework for understanding interactions that affect IEQ.
-
The role of human experience in indoor health – why measurements alone can’t tell the full story.
-
How Dr. Claudia Miller’s “Symptom Star” works – a practical tool that connects occupant experiences with building conditions in real time.
-
A new way forward for healthy indoor spaces – how integrating people and building science leads to environments that truly support well-being.
