When is a Mold Complaint NOT a Mold Problem?
(Answer: Not often!)

Scott Lawson, CIH, President
The Lawson Group, Concord, NH

About this program:

When occupants suspect mold, the instinct is often to begin testing immediately. But what if mold isn't the real problem?

This session presents a proven, investigation-first approach to resolving indoor air quality (IAQ) complaints. Rather than assuming mold is the cause, we begin by treating every concern as an IAQ issue and follow a systematic process to identify the true source of occupant complaints. While environmental testing and monitoring may be part of the investigation, they are used strategically—not as the starting point.

Drawing on decades of experience and hundreds of successful investigations, this presentation will demonstrate how a thorough, evidence-based process often reveals issues other than mold, leading to practical solutions that satisfy both building owners and occupants. Attendees will gain a framework they can apply to confidently evaluate complaints, avoid unnecessary testing, and focus on resolving the underlying problem.

Who Should Attend

This presentation is ideal for facility managers, building engineers, maintenance directors, human resources professionals, environmental health and safety staff, risk managers, and others responsible for responding to occupant complaints about indoor environmental quality. Anyone who investigates or manages concerns related to suspected mold, odors, or indoor air quality will benefit from this practical, real-world approach.

Learning Goals:

By attending this session you will learn how to:

  • Deal with IAQ issues in a timely manner

  • Not disregard any IAQ complaint as "frivolous"

  • Pay routine attention to HVAC/Mechanical system operation and maintenance

  • Pay proper attention to day-to-day housekeeping

  • Be proactive regarding IAQ in your building. Don't assume that because you are not getting complaints that all is well!!
